Chapter 19

Not Tonight

“Mae?” Lori called, opening her front door with the key she’d used liberally over the past few months.

“In here,” Mae called, surprised to hear how rough her own voice sounded.

“Perfect timing,” Aldrin said. He nodded to Lori, as he took Mae’s vitals again.

“Oh hey, Doc,” Lori said. “Glad to see you here. So, Thomas got you out of Protector Headquarters?”

Mae frowned. “Thomas? No.” Her heart started to beat faster and Aldrin looked at her with concern as the small monitor attached to her beeped in alarm. “Why would Thomas go down there?” She forced out the question past the burning in her throat.

“I sent him—with the note from Aldrin,” Lori said. Her usual gregarious nature overshadowed as she stood biting her bottom lip. “You’re not mad are you?”

He’s still free from all of this. The tension popped and a relieved giggle escaped her chest. Aldrin and Lori shared a look. “I’m not mad. This has been a strange day is all.”

Lori brought a blanket over to where Mae sat on the couch and tucked it around her legs. “You know I don’t have hypothermia right?”

Lori clicked her tongue. “If you don’t look after yourself, then I have permission to go into full mother-mode.” She tipped her head towards Aldrin, who was gathering his things into his bag at the table. “Aldrin said so.”

He gave her an apologetic grin, managing to not look sorry at all. “I’m afraid it’s true.” His mouth dropped back to a worried twist. “You are teetering, my dear. I’ve left the meds you can take tonight here on the table. If things change, I expect a call.”

“I’ll be fine Rin,” Mae said, meeting his eyes to assure him. He still worried. “Are you back at the MSC tonight?”

He glanced at the clock. “For a few more hours, but then I’ll be home. Call me anytime.”

“I’ll make sure she does,” Lori said as she set a large cup of peppermint tea on the side table next to Mae and returned to the kitchen. The fresh aroma cleared her head.

Aldrin gave her another concerned glance and squeezed her hand, before gathering his things. “Rest well.” A few moments later the door clicked close behind him.

“Where’s your glass?” Lori asked. Without waiting for an answer, she dug through Mae’s bag before pulling the glass free with a victorious grunt. She typed a quick message and dropped it back in the bag.

“What was that?” Mae asked, indignant.

“We forgot to tell Thomas you were home. Now I did.”

“Oh.”

Mae sipped at her tea and silently worried about Khai. They may not know who they were looking for yet, but she imagined it was only a matter of time. Had he really come from outside of the boundary? She guessed his eyes held the answer as they had sat on the rooftop. The longing in his voice when he spoke of the wild. As if it were—home.

If there was an outbreak would it mean she would be the first patient? A chill snaked down her spine leaving a trail of goose bumps in its wake.
